Are you a 2022 Statewide Candidate in New Mexico?

If you are a statewide or federal candidate with a Major-Party in New Mexico you will need to file your Declaration of Candidacy on February 1st, 2022 at the New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office between 9 am and 5 pm.
If you are running in a Major-Party in New Mexico (Republican, Democrat, or Libertarian,) your voter registration must show that party by or on the day the Secretary of State, which is Monday, January 31st, 2022.
You will need to make an appointment to file your declaration of Candidacy.

Filing Day tips
Filing officers will not accept filings prior to 9:00 a.m.
Candidates not appearing by 5:00 p.m. in the appropriate filing officer’s office cannot file.
Candidates must file in the office of the appropriate filing officer
Be prepared with all necessary information and have all forms completed.

What happens if you don’t get the pre-primary convention designation?
1-8-33(D)
A candidate who fails to receive the preprimary convention designation that the candidate sought may collect additional signatures to total at least four percent of the total vote of the candidate’s party in the state or congressional district, whichever applies to the office the candidate seeks, and file a new declaration of candidacy and nominating petitions for the office for which the candidate failed to receive a preprimary designation. The declaration of candidacy and nominating petitions shall be filed with the secretary of state either ten days following the date of the pre-primary convention at which the candidate failed to receive the designation or on the date all declarations of candidacy and nominating petitions are due pursuant to the provisions of the Primary Election Law [1-8-10to 1-8-52 NMSA 1978], whichever is later.
