Are you planning on being a candidate in the upcoming election?
The Regular Local Election is on November 2nd and encompasses many positions from many municipalities across the great state of New Mexico. A list of offices up for election can be found at the New Mexico Secretary of State’s website at https://www.sos.state.nm.us/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2021_RLE_FullColor_English_Proclamation.pdf. All municipalities have their own set of campaign finance rules that must be followed if running for office in a specific municipality.
School board elections are held under the RLE, but candidates for school boards must report all campaign finances in the NM State Campaign Finance Information System (CFIS). School board candidates must also follow state statutes for RLE, School Board, and Campaign Practices, which can be found in the newly released 2021 Election Handbook. There are specified filing dates such as the declaration of candidacy which must be submitted on August 24th,2021 to the proper filing office, and campaign finance report dates that fall on the twenty-first day before the election and the thirtieth day after the election.
Complying with NM State Statutes can be a huge determining factor in the election, and can result in disqualification if not understood and abided by.
